trick daddy f/ twista & lil jon “let’s go”

a lot of producers were kicking themselves when Trick Daddy’s “Let’s Go” dropped. After all, the sample was right in front of their faces. Flip Ozzy Osbourne’s classic “Crazy Train,” and a Top 10 Billboard hit would’ve been theirs. Instead, Miami-based producers Unusual Suspects—comprised of Jim Jonsin, 34, and Big D, 35—got the biggest production credit of their career. “We wanted to do a special record for Trick,” Big D says. “We just felt like he’d be able to show people [he] can rap on whatever.”

The rocked-out smash, along with Pitbull’s “Dammit Man,” also showed that the Unusual Suspects—who previously did mostly album cuts for Trick and Trina—were more than just solid producers. “We want to compete with Timbaland, Scott Storch, Dr. Dre, Eminem, and all the big producers,” says Jonsin. Although a classic-rock sample dominated their breakout hit, distinct musical backgrounds ensure that their sound won’t become easily identifiable. Big D played guitar with famous gospel artists like Shirley Caesar and BeBe and CeCe Winans. Jonsin grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and Electric Light Orchestra, influenced by his father, a drummer whose group occasionally opened for Billy Joel.
