By now, you should be familiar with Denaun Porter. Whether you know his government or wonder after looking at him, “Ain’t that the dude in Eminem’s group,” chances are you’ve danced to his beats at your local block party.
A producing vet since ’93 Porter’s name (Kon Artis from the group D-12) didn’t ring bells till Dr. Dre gave him a shot. “I remember I was in Australia and it was 7 am over there,” Porter recalls. “I gave Dre a CD a week ago. It was the first time I sold major beats, and he called and said, ‘I want seven joints.’ And there was 12 joints on the CD.” Out of those seven were X-Zibit’s raucous Westside banger, “Multiply,” and 50 Cent’s ever-infectious “P.I.M.P.” “I knew then that he was giving me an opportunity,” he says of his monster break. “So, I just started fucking with Dre more and more.”
One of the projects Porter and the good doctor would work on is the now defunct Detox album [read our cover story for more –Ed.]. “You know what’s funny,” he gathers about the once anticipated CD. “I came [to Cali] to work on Detox, but [Dre] got so much shit going on that it’s…I don’t know, we ain’t really got to it.”
