The Inspiration

With tracks from Pharrell, Swizz Beatz and DJ Premier, Papoose’s debut,
The Nacirema Dream, is shaping up to be a reality.

When it came to talking about The Nacirema Dream (that’s “American” backwards for you slow folks)—Bed Stuy, Brooklyn lyrical slugger Papoose was in full covert mode. As we tried to get more details about his upcoming debut, Pap dodged more questions than a rapper in a precinct, saying, “I really want people to buy the album to really see what’s on it. I’m not going to let it out just yet.” Still, we pressed on...

Chalk his caution up to being a seasoned rookie. The Lyrical One’s first shot at the rap life came when he connected with Kool G Rap in 1998, but after passing on a bum deal tendered by Select Records, he was soon back on the block. “Everything I did was just a substitute to keep me stable until I became successful in music,” says Pap who—after connecting with Kay Slay in 2004, slinging dozens of fiery mixtapes and receiving a Busta Rhymes co-sign—signed with Jive Records for a reported $1.5 million. “All the trials and tribulations in my life—trying to be successful, trying to feed my family—it’s definitely a reflection of the American dream.”

“title tbd” produced by dj premier That was a helluva experience. I always have respect for him. He respected what I was doing; he gave it up and I gave it right back. Back in the day he always knew who I was, and of course I knew who he was. And you know Premier, he do it right there in front of your face, he cooks it up. He’s like, “Yo man, I don’t think I’ma finish it today, come in tomorrow and I’ma have it ready for you.” I heard this [beat] and I was just blown away, right there on the spot. It just inspired me to create the lyrics to it. He gave it to me a while ago and I didn’t want to release it because I wanted to make sure it be on the album. I didn’t want to record it and throw it out there. It came out crazy. Classic joint.

“title tbd” produced by focus I got a joint from Focus that’s crazy too. People going to respect that. He submitted a beat CD, when I heard that I was like, “That’s the track right there.” I recorded it, he came and he mixed it. It was a good vibe.
