Story Matt Barone
AZ
“The Come Up”
(Koch)
DJ Premier returns with his prized boom-bap percussion, swift scratches, and sampled strings
as AZ flexes metaphorical muscle. Silent as of late, clearly Primo hasn’t lost a step. Throw on and flash back to ’95.
Bump J f/ Kanye West
“Pusha Man”
(Atlantic)
Nearly biting himself, Kanye crafts sped-up vocal samples and horns sounding similar to
Twista’s “Overnight Celebrity.” Still, newcomer Bump’s rapid-fire flow and West’s singsong hook make this product worth pushing.
Three 6 Mafia f/ Young Buck and Eightball & MJG
“I Gotta Stay High”
(Hypnotize Minds/Sony Urban)
DJ Paul and Juicy J arrange an all-Memphis hotbox session high on energy. Piercing violins
and bluesy guitars combine for the most addictive weed anthem Mary Jane could supply.
Tony Yayo
“Pimpin’”
(G-Unit/Interscope)
Sure to be a summer soundtrack, G-Unit’s predicate felon switches to P.I.M.P. mode, offering
basic misogyny atop G.M.M.’s generic acoustics and bubbly bass. Been here, heard this.
Freeway
“Where You Been”
(Roc-A-Fella)
Surprise! Scott Storch scores again. Placing airy flutes above ?uestlove’s polished percussion,
the proven hitman blesses Freeway with a backdrop perfectly matching his unique flow. Free has never sounded better.
Bubba Sparxxx
“Hey”
(Purple Ribbon)
Sounds like Timbaland caught the Houston bug. Country boy Sparxxx spits as strong as ever,
but Timmy’s sluggish instrumental plays like a screwed and chopped version of Jigga’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulders.”
Remy Ma
“Whuteva”
(SRC/Universal)
Terror Squad’s ride-or-die chick shuts clubs down on this rowdy party-crasher. Over Swizz
Beatz’ frantic strings, Ms. Ma confesses intentions to “get niggas shot” with her music. This gutter entry definitely could inspire gunfire.
Jae Millz
“I Like Dat”
(SRC/Universal)
Harlem battler Millz gets his party on via Cool and Dre’s dance floor–ready blend of strings
and deep bounce. Punch lines fly at will as Millz wins with this up-tempo departure from his street tradition.
Field Mob f/ Ludacris
“Georgia”
(DTP)
Ray Charles receives a makeover even Jamie Foxx would respect. Luda and his latest DTP
acquisitions salute their homeland over a marauding bounce and sampling of Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind.”
Killer Mike f/ Big Boi
“My Chrome”
(Purple Ribbon/Sony Urban)
High-octane drums plus spastic synthesizers give Mike the perfect platform to vocally bob
and weave with automotive stunting. Brief cameo from Daddy Fat Stacks included, it’s another unconventional yet undeniable OutKast-cosigned hit.
P$C
“Set It Out”
(Grand Hustle/Atlantic)
Finally, an instructional guide to kicking your open-legged wifey to the curb. T.I. and his
Pimp Squad issue the guidelines as breezy horns and acoustics glide behind. Just right for the summer heat.
Youngbloodz
“Presidential”
(LaFace)
Damn, Lil Jon sure loves his synthesizers. As overused as they are, though, Jon’s synths remain
surefire ingredients to any club riot, and this Youngbloodz spitfest is no different. Breaks little ground, but should still smash below the Mason-Dixon nonetheless.
